Parts

Your Parts Were There from the Start — and That Is Good News

Bright this morning, tense by afternoon, hiding in a series by nightfall. You are not strange. You have parts.

The Self4 min read

Have you ever felt that you were not quite yourself? This morning you got out of bed bright, ready to do things, entirely yourself.

By the afternoon you are someone else: tense, anxious, a voice in your head insisting this has to be good enough. And by evening, sitting at home, another voice arrives — escape for a bit, put on a series, play something, forget it for one night.

The good news is that this is ordinary.

Everyone is born with parts already

Not because we are strange, and not because we were hurt to the point of breaking. A mind is naturally made of many things at once.

Think of a family: a father, a mother, a child, a grandmother — the one who worries well, the one who plays, the one who organises everyone. Your mind works the same way. Many parts, each different, and together they form an inner family.

So what is a part, really?

Parts are not just "thoughts" or "imagination". They are real presences, and they show up in more than one way.

  • Thoughts that surface on their ownthis has to be good or there is no point trying
  • Emotions and moods — worry, sadness, excitement, happiness
  • Images from the past — the moments that hurt, and the ones that did not
  • Physical sensations — a sharp pang, a tightness, a sudden cold
  • Pain or tension — a headache, or that pressure across the chest

Every part means well

This is the most interesting part. Each one formed in order to help. Every part has a good intention, trying to do right by your system — even when the method it chose looks like anything but.

So what happens when we are hurt?

When something wounds us — in body or in mind — the part carrying that hurt gets pushed to the very back. IFS calls it an exile. And the remaining parts get pushed into new roles, stepping up as protectors, which come in two kinds.

Managers

They protect in advance: planning, controlling, keeping everything in order. Their belief is if everything is in order, nobody leaves, and we do not get hurt.

Firefighters

When the manager's approach stops working, these ones jump in — run! forget it! make this stop right now! It comes out as gaming, hours of a series, eating without stopping, or leaving on a trip nobody planned.

They are not bad. They are trying to look after you with the only methods they know.

Like a younger sibling who badly wants to help and has not yet worked out how. Your parts hold the old wounds, and what they learned from them is simple: if we do not protect, we get hurt again.

So what should we do?

That is what IFS teaches.

  • Understand your parts, and what each one is doing
  • Listen to what they are afraid of
  • Speak with kindness instead of fighting them

So what are your parts? Try listening to them. The answer may surprise you.

Frequently asked questions about parts

Is it abnormal to feel like more than one person?

No. IFS holds that everyone is born with parts already — not because we are strange, or hurt to the point of breaking, but because a mind is naturally made of many things at once.

How does a part actually show up?

As thoughts that surface on their own, as emotions and moods, as images from the past, as physical sensations, and as pain or tension in the body.

Why does IFS say every part means well?

Because every one of them formed to help. The part demanding control is afraid you will be hurt without it. The part steering you toward another episode is trying to make the pain smaller. The method can look bad while the intention is entirely on your side.

What is the difference between a manager and a firefighter?

Managers protect in advance by planning, controlling, and keeping everything in order. Firefighters step in once the manager's approach has already failed, to make the pain that broke through stop as fast as possible.

Is the goal of IFS to get rid of the parts you do not want?

No. The goal is to understand them, hear what they are afraid of, and speak to them with kindness instead of fighting them. The parts remain — they simply stop running your life.
